A Simple Summer Sangria

Sangria has been a part of my life for years. Back when I lived in DC, I was always the one at the DC United tailgates bringing not one but two types of sangria: white and red. On match day, I’d show up with top-shelf bourbon or bottles of wine from boutique wineries, but the sangria? That was my thing. I’d have it all set up in those cool, spouted containers with fruit already soaking in, but I’d also bring extra sliced fruit just in case people wanted to make their drink a little more personal.

It’s not just about the drink for me; it’s about the experience. I’ve always been a fan of the way sangria brings people together, whether you’re serving it at a backyard BBQ, tailgating for your favorite sports team, or just kicking back with a glass on a lazy weekend afternoon. I first fell in love with sangria at some of my favorite Latin-inspired restaurants in DC, and since then, I’ve considered myself a bit of a sangria connoisseur.

And let’s be real, sangria is always a crowd-pleaser. Super easy to make, but it’s one of those drinks that feels like you’re putting in way more effort than you really are. Whether you’re trying to impress guests or just treating yourself, this refreshing, fruit-filled wine cocktail always delivers.

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle red wine (such as Rioja or Merlot) (750 ml)
  • 1/4 cup brandy (60 ml)
  • 1/4 cup orange liqueur (such as triple sec) (60 ml)
  • 1 cup 1 cup orange juice (240 ml)
  • 1/4 cup sugar (50 g)
  • 1 orange (sliced)
  • 1 lemon (sliced)
  • 1 lime (sliced)
  • 1 apple (cored and sliced)
  • 1 cup strawberries (sliced)
  • 1 cup club soda or sparkling water (240 ml) (optional, for a fizzy touch)
  • ice

Instructions

  • Mix the Base: In a large pitcher, combine the red wine, brandy, orange liqueur, and orange juice. Stir in the sugar until it dissolves.
  • Add the Fruit: Add the orange, lemon, lime, and apple slices to the pitcher. Stir to combine.
  • Chill: Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, allowing the flavors to meld. For best results, chill for up to 24 hours.
  • Serve: Before serving, add the club soda or sparkling water if you like a fizzy sangria. Fill glasses with ice and pour the sangria over the top, making sure to include some of the fruit slices in each glass.
  • Garnish (Optional): Garnish with additional fruit slices if desired.
